If you searched for "APRS map alternative" or "aprs.fi alternative", you almost certainly already know what APRS is — you have a current tool and you are wondering whether something better fits the way you work. This guide is a neutral, respectful tour of the APRS viewer landscape: the long-standing options, the modern entrants, and what each one is actually good at.
The short version up front: there is no single best APRS viewer. The right tool depends on whether you want to transmit, just visualize, run on a desktop or a phone, fly a balloon, monitor an EmComm net, or build something new on top of the data. Different clients optimize for different jobs.

Each category contains good tools. The question is which one matches the workflow you actually have.
aprs.fi is the dominant APRS visualizer on the public internet and has been since Heikki Hannikainen (OH7LZB) launched it in 2007. It is the tool most operators bookmark when they get on the air, the reference everyone implicitly compares others to, and the backbone of countless EmComm dashboards.
What aprs.fi does very well:
None of what follows is a critique of aprs.fi. It is the public standard, and the rest of this guide assumes you may continue to use it alongside any other tool.
APRS World is a modern web viewer first published in 2026. It exists not to replace aprs.fi but to offer a different point on the design space — one focused on a few specific properties:
Where it does not match the incumbent: position history depth is shallower (30 days versus years on aprs.fi), the third-party integration ecosystem is small because the API is new, and there is no equivalent of the long-form forum that has grown up around aprs.fi over the years. We are an alternative, not a parity replacement.
For operators who want to transmit as well as visualize — and who have a radio plus a TNC plus a workstation — desktop clients remain the right tool.
YAAC (Yet Another APRS Client) — Andrew Pavlin's (KA2DDO) Java application. Cross-platform (Linux, Windows, macOS), modular, scriptable, and the most extensible desktop client by a wide margin. Steeper learning curve than the web tools, repaid by years of useful service.
Xastir — A C/GTK client with deep roots in the Linux APRS community. Excellent for fixed-station and EmComm use, with mature support for serial KISS TNCs and a lot of EmComm-specific overlays.
UI-View32 — Roger Barker (G4IDE)'s Windows client. Discontinued (Roger passed in 2004), but still in heavy use because the codebase reached "done" in a way few APRS tools have. If you have a working UI-View32 install, there is no urgency to replace it.
Desktop clients are the right answer when you need the same machine to both receive RF and visualize the network. A browser cannot do that.
Phone-based APRS has a small but dedicated ecosystem.
APRSdroid — Georg Lukas (DO1GL)'s open-source Android client. The de-facto standard for phone-based APRS for over a decade. Beacons over Bluetooth TNCs, audio cable, or APRS-IS. Solid, lean, dependable. iOS does not have an equivalent.
PocketPacket — iOS APRS client. Different scope and feature set than the Android side; iOS Bluetooth and audio constraints make full radio integration harder than on Android.
APRS World Mobile — Our own React Native app for Android and iOS, shipped 2026. Bluetooth KISS TNC support on Android (iOS limited by Apple's MFi restriction on classic Bluetooth radios), offline map packs for field operation outside cellular coverage, and live integration with the aprs.world backend so your messages and saved stations sync across devices.
For most non-transmit visualization, the same browser-based viewer that works on your laptop also works on your phone — but a native app earns its keep when you need offline maps, push notifications, or radio I/O.

There is room in this ecosystem for multiple healthy tools, and most active operators end up using two or three of them in different contexts. The right answer is rarely "pick one and discard the others".
