What does APRS stand for?

APRS stands for Automatic Packet Reporting System. The name was originally Automatic Position Reporting System when Bob Bruninga (WB4APR) first published it in the late 1980s, but he later revised it to Packet because position is only one of the things APRS carries — the network also handles weather, telemetry, short text messages, and objects.

Do I need an amateur radio licence to use APRS?

To transmit on APRS, yes — you need a valid amateur radio licence in your country, because APRS runs on shared amateur VHF and HF bands.

To only look at the live map in a browser, you do not need a licence at all. Anyone can open aprs.world, aprs.fi, or any other public APRS visualizer and watch the network. We get a lot of curious visitors who are not licensed; you are welcome.

What frequency does APRS use?

On VHF:

HF APRS runs at 10.1473 MHz USB on the 30-metre band, with a slower 300-baud modulation.

Is APRS the same as GPS tracking?

No. APRS is a digital radio protocol; GPS is one of many possible sources of the position that an APRS packet carries. Some stations beacon a GPS-derived position, some beacon a fixed home location with no GPS at all, and some beacon a Maidenhead grid square typed in by hand. APRS is about the over-the-air transport, not about the position-source technology.

How fast is APRS data?

The standard VHF APRS link is 1200 baud — slow by modern internet standards but plenty for short position and message packets. HF APRS runs at 300 baud. End-to-end latency from a station pressing PTT to the marker moving on a public web map is typically one to three seconds.

Do I need an internet connection to use APRS?

No. APRS works as a pure RF network and does much of its work that way — local groups, EmComm nets, and field events often run with no internet at all. The internet tier (APRS-IS) is an optional convenience layer that lets distant operators see each other and lets websites like aprs.world visualize the global feed. Your beacon will be heard on the air by anything in range with or without internet involvement.

Is APRS encrypted or private?

No, and it cannot be made so. Amateur radio in nearly every jurisdiction forbids encryption (with narrow exceptions for satellite command and a few experimental authorisations). Every APRS packet is in the clear and visible to anyone who tunes in or visits any public visualizer. Treat APRS messages and beacons like a public bulletin board: do not put anything on the network that you would not put on a postcard.

What is an APRS passcode and where do I get one?

An APRS passcode is a free, deterministic five-digit number calculated from your callsign. It is not a password — it is a courtesy filter that proves you can run the documented algorithm. APRS-IS uses it to gate iGate uploads and authenticated web logins.

How do I see myself on the APRS map?

You need three things:

  1. A valid amateur radio licence.
  2. A way to put a packet on the local APRS frequency — an APRS-capable radio (Yaesu, Kenwood, Anytone), a phone with the APRS World mobile app driving a TNC, or a dedicated tracker like a LightAPRS.
  3. A clear sky for any iGate within radio range to hear you.

Once you beacon, your callsign should appear on aprs.world and aprs.fi within seconds.

What is the difference between aprs.world and aprs.fi?

Is APRS World free?

Yes. The live map, the station pages, the search, the public API at https://api.aprs.world, the guides, and the mobile app are all free to use. There is no paywall on the public visualizer. A small set of advanced features (long-term saved alerts and similar) is reserved for a Premium tier on the mobile app, but every core APRS-viewing function is free for everyone.
