"APRS software" covers a surprisingly wide range of programs, and the right one depends almost entirely on what you actually want to do. Some people want to watch stations move on a map and never transmit a thing. Some want to put their own callsign on the air. Some want to run an iGate that quietly feeds packets from their local area up to the internet. Each of those goals points at a different program — and the good news is that nearly every serious APRS program is free.
This guide maps out the real APRS software landscape in 2026, organized by platform, with an honest opinion at the end about which one to start with. If you are completely new to the mode, read What is APRS? first, then come back — this page assumes you already know what a beacon and a packet are.
Before the platform-by-platform tour, it helps to understand the two jobs any APRS program is doing:
The distinction that trips up most newcomers is view-only versus transmit (TX). Watching the map needs nothing but an internet connection. Transmitting needs a licence, a radio, and a way to turn bytes into tones — either a hardware TNC or a software TNC (a sound-card modem). Keep that split in mind as you read, because it is the single biggest factor in which program fits you.
Windows has the deepest APRS software catalogue, largely for historical reasons — this is where the mode's desktop culture grew up.
PinPoint APRS is the easiest place for a Windows beginner to start. It is free, it looks like a modern application rather than something from 2003, and it uses online map tiles out of the box so there is no fiddling with map imagery. Point it at APRS-IS and you are watching stations in a couple of minutes; add a radio and a TNC and it will beacon and message too. If you want a clean first experience on Windows, this is the one to try first.
APRSIS32 (by Lynn Deffenbaugh, KJ4ERJ) is the power-user's choice and is actively maintained — a rarity in this corner of the hobby. It is free, endlessly configurable, and is the program a large share of the world's software iGates actually run. It beacons under the TOCALL APWW, so if you see that device string on a station's page here on APRS World, there is a good chance you are looking at an APRSIS32 iGate. The learning curve is steeper than PinPoint's, but nothing else on Windows matches it for building an iGate or digipeater exactly the way you want.
UI-View32 is the classic. For years it was APRS on Windows, and a meaningful fraction of the network still runs on it today. It is freeware but discontinued — development stopped long ago, and it predates modern online map tiles, so setup involves period-correct map files and workarounds. We would not send a newcomer here, but if you inherit a station running it, or you are curious about the software that shaped the mode, it is worth knowing. YAAC — "Yet Another APRS Client", by Andrew Pavlin, KA2DDO — is the answer when you want one program that runs the same everywhere. Because it is written in Java, the identical application runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, which makes it a natural pick for anyone who moves between operating systems or runs a mixed shack. It is free, full-featured (map view, messaging, TX, iGate, digipeater), and does not care what machine it is sitting on. The trade-off is the usual Java one: it needs a Java runtime installed, and the interface prioritizes capability over polish. If cross-platform consistency matters to you, YAAC is hard to beat.
Xastir is the mature, open-source workhorse of the Unix world. It has been developed for decades, it runs on Linux and macOS (and can be coaxed onto Windows), and it does essentially everything: map display, TX/RX through a TNC or software modem, messaging, iGate and digipeater duty, weather-station support, and deep customization. It is not the prettiest program on this list, and first-time setup asks more of you than PinPoint does, but for a Linux operator who wants a serious, no-cost, RF-capable station, Xastir is the standard answer. Everything above can talk to the internet on its own. To get on the air you also need to turn audio into packets and back — traditionally a hardware TNC, but in 2026 most operators use a software TNC (a sound-card modem) instead. Two matter:
Neither is a full APRS client on its own — think of them as the "radio driver" that sits underneath PinPoint, APRSIS32, YAAC, or Xastir.
On a phone, APRSdroid is the long-standing Android APRS app: it beacons your position, sends and receives messages, and connects to a radio over Bluetooth or audio. It is the reference point most Android APRS users know. Not every "APRS program" is something you download. APRS World — the site you are reading this on — is a browser-based APRS client. Open the live map and stations from the worldwide APRS-IS feed appear within a second or two, with full symbol rendering, weather, telemetry, and recent tracks. Search a callsign and you land on its station page with the last several weeks of history. There is nothing to install, it works on any device with a browser, and it is the fastest way to look at APRS.
Being honest about the trade-off: a browser cannot key your transmitter or read a TNC directly, so this is the zero-setup viewing option, not a replacement for a radio-attached desktop program when you want to TX. For most people, most of the time, viewing is all they need — and for that, the browser is the least-friction tool on this entire list.
